By now those of you who pay attention to what the rest of the world might think (though you might not necessarily care) have noticed that somehow, someway and somewhere along the line being a "nerd", "geek" or "dork" has become "cool". Granted, I've never needed anyone else to tell me that I'm pretty damn rad, but it's kind of nice to even consider hiding my Nerd Flag these days. Hell, the way the internet and computers have taken over everything we've all been way ahead of the times and now the nerds shall inherit the Earth.
So yeah. Dan and I are a couple of cool dudes chatting about some cool stuff on this most current episode of the BitCast.
Can't speak for everyone else around here, but Olympic fever always gets a pretty good grip on me... especially the Winter Games. I'm not one for typically watching sports in any way, shape or form but there's something quite enjoyable about the Olympics. Especially the curling. Yes, I'm serious.
As an American I usually get some strange looks when I mention I'm a curling fan, which I both am used to and don't give a shit about. As I said to a friend just the other day I'll take the precision and strategy of curling over the violence and egos of most major sports any day. So what does any of that have to do with either video games or this week's bitcast? Nothing. Not a thing. Just understand however.... curling? It rocks!
Jimmy, Daniel and Ryan embark on an un-chaperoned insanity-pepper-fuelled fever-dream beyond space and time, but sadly we only managed to record the sound part. This fever-dream conversation included (but was not limited to) talk of: madcap hijinks, shenanigans, goings-on, and horseplay. Also fairly concrete proof that we are not game developers. Also, news. Also, a speed-read of this week's releases. Also... DudeBro.
After a flubbed sync countdown and software crash brought an premature death to our first attempt at recording this episode we immediately rezzed, popped a couple of health and mana pots then stormed right back in to the dungeon that is our slightly meandering conversation. With the help of The Freelancers podcast guru, Joystiq contributor and former BBPS alum Xav De Matos (Internet Celebrity) we deliver one of the shortest What'cha Been Playing segments we've ever done as well as a look at the games that make up this crowded Q1. There's some News and chatter about New Releases as usual to round things out.
No enhanced edition this week. Blame it on Ryan's desire to play Mass Effect 2 instead of servicing you good people
In this episode we have a special guest with us, our very own Daniel Lloyd skyping in from his home state of Virginia! Dan L., Dan Z., Kevin and Ryan talk about what we've all been playing, what games those of us with PC's bought during the yearly Steam Sale (and which ones we think we'll actually EVER play). We talk about Microsoft's recently announced "Game Room" and how someone finally figured out a way to monetize MAME. The conversation then shambles into familiar territory where Dan tells us again why he hates digital "spaces" and Ryan tries to tell him why he's wrong. Also, the crew gets confused about Wii games and dance moves of the same name.
In this episode we have a rambling conversation around the most important/influential game related stuff from the past decade... working off the one list made prior to showtime by the one of us who decided to be prepared. Towards the end my cell phone goes off (again) and I get into a heated debate with Kevin about digital distribution. Making lists is always rife with condemnation and debate, so while we don't come up with any ranked top ten list we do touch on some of the games we felt helped define the decade... not to mention set up the decade ahead.
For the first time ever we're piloting an "enhanced" version of the podcast... so if that's your cup of tea we've got you covered. If you like the plain 'ol .mp3 don't worry we got that too!
This show's itinerary has some lofty goals. In addition to our normal what we've been playing segment we were going to talk about some of our favorite games of the decade, some news and some new releases. Instead? We talk about what we've been playing and why 1 of us is TOTALLY wrong about Assassin's Creed 2. Care to guess who? I'd go into what other tangents the podcast veers off to but that would just ruin the fun of making you listen to it, though we do make mention of some ideas for a games based on Canterbury Tales.
That's right party peoples, the bitcast podcast is back with a VENGEANCE! It's been in the planning stages for a little while now, as we only wanted to make a comeback if we were dedicated enough to the cause to make it work (We even used Google Wave to talk about it!).
Well, here we are... back in full effect. And by "full effect" I mean we have the original crew of Kevin, Jim, Dan and Ryan. It's like 2008 all over again. We'll be doing bi-weekly episodes from here on out, since it's a more realistic goal in the "how do we fit this into our lives" department.
This week we talk about:
Where the hell we've been
What the hell we've been playing
News... and stuff
Yo, is there like a best game you've played this year? Maybe a "game of the year?"
Dan wasn't able to make it to this week's show, but I feel like we've assembled a pretty reasonable replacement. Expect a slightly different format as we jump around a little from segment to segment. Lots of good stuff in there this week, so let's crack open the head of BitCast 76 and feed on it's gooey insides!
This week we talk about:
What'cha Been Playing (Start - 6:03)
Interview: David Nathaniels of Vicarious Visions talks Guitar Hero 5 on the Wii (6:04 - 23:14)
Rant: Batman will make you lose your damned mind (23:15 - 29:03)
Interview: Daniel Lloyd celebrates the Dreamcast's 10th birthday in style (29:04 - End)
That's right kiddies, you're favorite show is back from the dead and on the air! We're like The New WKRP, only with less Howard Hesseman and more Gordon Jump.
It's been awhile since we did one of these, so pardon the awkward sounds of our getting re-acquainted with podcasting.
This week we talk about:
Where We've Been/A Glimpse Behind the Scenes (Start - 16:15)
What'cha Been Playing (16:16 - 35:20)
The Rebirth of Adventure Games (35:21 - 46:48)
The Death of Music Games (46:49 - 1:08:40)
Hidden track/On the Merits of Mullets (1:08:41 - End)
We're slowing rebuilding the show, so expect links to a new Skype voicemail box and other fun stuff soon. We're also experimenting with the idea of an enhanced podcast, but that would mean making the show unlistenable to those with iTunes and/or an iPod. What do you think? If we created a separate bitcast feed in iTunes to offer an enhanced podcast in addition to the regular one, would you listen?
Like I said -- we're rebuilding. If you have any ideas or suggestions of what you'd like to hear on the show, please let us know!
