Tecmo Bowl for the Wii VC has player names removed! |

I had a bad feeling when I saw Tecmo Bowl on the VC launch list, and now those fears have been confirmed.
The original Tecmo Bowl never had the NFL license. It did however have the Players Association license, so even though it had fake team names it had real player names.
Well, in yet of another case of Virtual Console revisionist history (we’ve always been at war with Eurasia) the player names have been removed from the Wii VC version!
Somewhere between 1989 and today license issues must’ve cropped up, and it’s the consumers who end up with a gimped version of this classic game. Do player names matter to gameplay? Not really, but it’s much better to see Bo Jackson’s name than it is to see his number. Besides we bought the original game right? Right??
Nope. In other words, if you want to play the real version of the game you’re gonna need the cart and an NES. It’s a grim reminder that you’re not buying the original game, but an emulated one instead. Just like the Mario Kart and Kid Icarus changes. Hey Nintendo, if you’re able to make changes to these old games, how bout adding in some on-line stuff?
Also, remember this isn’t Tecmo Super Bowl, which was far superior and probably the one you have fond memories about.

[...] Admittedly, we should’ve noticed such when we played the game yesterday during our VC Monday Madness feature. Maybe its our old age, but we didn’t really notice the player names being changed at all. Regardless, it happened and while the original Tecmo Bowl on the NES didn’t have official NFL team names, they did have player names. This was the result of being endorsed by the NFL Player’s Association. [...]
Player Names Removed from Tecmo Bowl for VC by Wii Living on 15 Mar 2007 at 11:15 am #
[...] Bits Bytes Pixels and Sprites has confirmed that due to licensing restrictions, all player names have been removed from the Virtual Console version of Tecmo Bowl. When the game was released for the NES, it has the Player’s Association license which allowed it to use player names, but not team names. Between then and now, things have changed however in the legal realm and the game can no longer use those names without paying hefty licensing fees. Does it affect the gameplay? Not at all, but it might affect how players feel about the game. Do you care if Tecmo Bowl has real player names? [...]

Ed: No, this post was right. The original Tecmo Bowl did have the players association license just not the whole NFL license e.g., team names, Super Bowl, Pro Bowl trademarks.
