Dungeons & Dragons, the most well known RPG ever (I'm talking tabletop, pen and paper here) has had an online MMO since early 2006. The online game recently announced that it's changing things up a little with a new "free to play" service. You can download and play the game online - not just a demo - for free. Monetizing will still be included via microtransactions and VIP memberships.
In-game currency can be bought via microtransactions and used for purchasing items or upgrades, but it's simply a choice of convenience. Those who don't pay still have opportunities to be awarded currency, and those who do aren't necessarily getting to unfairly max out their character. VIP members will pay $15 a month to get access to exclusive content, as well as an added allowance each month for their character.
The thought process behind this is that if it's free the user base will expand, allowing more people to potentially fall in love with D&D and possibly become VIP members. Not a bad idea. Being completely foreign to the world of MMOs, I was actually very interested in testing this out simply because of the free access. However, Mac users be warned, D&D Online is PC only. Alas, I am still "teh noob."
Does the game being free to play up your interest in the title? Do you think microtransactions and VIP perks are fair? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Click here to get downloading the game absolutely free.
