It’s 2am and I have just returned from Capcom and GameStop’s RE5 launch party in San Francisco. A lot happened: there was laughter, blood, tears, and even a dance-off. What follows are the highlights of my adventure.
6:20pm: Some friends and I embark on our journey to Union Square.
6:45pm: We make it to San Francisco and immediately proceed to the GameStop location that is a part of the launch celebration. I decide to go with the Collector’s Edition RE5 for the Xbox 360 ($89.99).
7:15pm: With our receipts and wristbands in our hands on around our wrists, we make it to the RE5 tent, otherwise known as Ground Zero. The line is relatively short, but that will soon change.
7:20pm: While geeking out over how cool this party is going to be we have a bit of a scare when a guard says we have to buy the game to be allowed entrance to the party. (This is eventually cleared up and we are all allowed entrance).
8:00pm: We enter the tent and are given another scare when we are confronted by two guards dressed in BSAA outfits who are “scanning us for contamination”.
8:15pm: We split up, and I begin scanning the various booths spread out across the main room. (The tent was split into two sections: one half had the booths and main stage and the other half had rows of kiosks so people could play RE5 on the 360 or PS3.) The first booth was ‘tatooing cell phones’ with RE5 logos and pictures. I left my phone with them and when I returned it looked something like this:

8:25pm: I find myself at the Venom Energy Drink booth so I greet the women running the booth who are giving out energy drinks like they are candy, grab my own drink, and go on my way.
8:45pm: I decide to join a friend in the Kiosk section to play a little Resident Evil 5. We defeat the Leech Man boss fairly quickly and easily. Not wanting to spoil the game before I can play it at home, I decide to leave.
9:05pm: I return to the main room to discover a line of people all waiting for something, so like any follower, I jump in line not knowing what to expect.
9:25pm: The lien has whittled down to just a few people in front of me and I finally realize what everyone is waiting for: AUTOGRAPHS! Jun Takeuchi and three other members of the Resident Evil 5 development team are giving autographs. I say hi to Takeuchi San (very cool guy by the way), get him to sign my shirt, and a friend of mine shows him the new Avon commercial, and boy is he surprised by its resemblance to a certain Umbrella product. Here’s my RE5 shirt, with autographs from some of the RE5 development team:

10:15pm: Capcom reveals a new Resident Evil game for the Wii, called Resident Evil: Dark Chronicles. It’s going to be like Umbrella Chronicles with a darker setting and will star Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield as the game’s two main protagonists. The game looks very cool, but it only adds to the growing regret I have for selling my Wii…
10: 45pm: I meet the utterly beautiful Karen Dyer who is the voice and likeness for Sheva and get her autograph and picture.
11:15pm: One of my friends busts a move and starts a Resident Dance-Off, many funky grooves ensue.
11:45pm: The time has finally come, we are instructed to line up to get the game we’ve all been longing for!
12: 05pm: With my new Resident Evil 5 Collector’s Edition box in hand, I proudly exit the tent. The box seems a bit small, as the Chris figurine and messenger bag are bit… less than what I expected. Here’s what it looks like:

12: 05pm: I see some of the cast of Resident Evil 5, so I get them to sign the inside of my newly acquired metal RE5 case (which is very cool by the way):

Overall I’d say the Launch Party was a huge success, I met a lot of cool Resident Evil fans, shook the hand of Jun Takeuchi, and left with some seriously sweet swag. Well done, Capcom, well done.
