10 Games that Didn't Live Up to the Hype
Written by Adam Dodd

Ahh, hype.  Even the best of us fall for it at least once.  Some of us fall for it twice, and many of us continue to jump on that wicked Hypewagon no matter how many times it lets us down.  Unfortunately, I fall into that last category of continually disappointed individuals.  So what are the ten games that tricked me into thinking they would be the next big thing?  The next must-have game?  The life-changing title that would question my morals and alter the way I look at video games forever?  Alright, that last goal might've been a bit lofty, but you get the point.  If you've been let down by a game (or several) you know how I feel, so read on for the ten overhyped games that burned me, and burned me bad.

10. Heavenly Sword

It's God of War, but instead of controlling a hell-born death machine of bulky man power, you get to control a member of the fairer sex.  It was supposed to have the same jaw-dropping moments, brutal gameplay, and epic story as its Greek sibling but with the addition of a gorgeous lead character and, of course, the PS3's Skynet technology.  This is a formula that had win written all over it.  Unfortunately the game was plagued with a very short campaign (and no multiplayer), frustrating bosses, mundane button-mashing combat, and an overall lack of truly awesome moments.

9. Too Human

I can hear the pitch now:  "We've thought of a game that takes the loot hunting of Diablo, with a pinch of Norse mythology thrown in, and an epic story that spans over three games."  How do you mess up such a stunning recipe for success?  Well, you let it come to a boil over ten years of development hell, convolute the story, turn the lead character into a generic space marine, throw in some awful controls (particularly involving the combat), and make one of the game's biggest selling points, the loot gathering, and turn it into a chore to manage with a dreadful inventory system.

8. Haze

I love my PS3, but for a good chunk of the console's life it was without a killer app.  Heavenly Sword and Resistance tried their best (and gave it a good go I might say), but failed to capture the hearts of really anyone other than crap resistant fanboys.  Haze promised gamers a truly awesome FPS, it was supposed to have jaw-dropping visuals, an excellent story, and pledged to be Sony's Halo.  After playing it for a few hours before tossing the disc back to the greedy clerks at GameStop, I can say that the game failed on all accounts.  Haze isn't even a good game, I dare to say it's not even average.  It's frustrating, ugly, and boring.  The vehicles are slightly entertaining and the coop is a nice touch, but even those features couldn't save the game from becoming an epic fail.

7. Red Steel

When I first saw the Wii's controllers I remember hoping and praying that someone would make a game with lightsaber combat, because the Wii-motes are perfect for that type of gameplay.  When Red Steel was first announced I was giddy with excitement at the idea of almost-real sword play.  I pictured fighting a friend in an epic duel as we crossed virtual swords where, upon my friend's defeat, I would utter some witty one-liner like "Ha Ha!  You, a mere mortal, thought you could defeat me?"  before bringing the fight to an end with a final slash of my wii-mote.  This situation, or anything even resembling said situation, did not take place when I played this game.  Instead I was met with terribly awkward controls, repetitive combat, and a poorly written story.  Needless to say, I was sad.

6. Bionic Commando

I've never played any of the original 2D Bionic Commandos, but that doesn't mean I don't know how full of win and awesome they are.  Even having never played any games in the series before, this game looked really awesome.  I didn't there was a chance this game could be bad, because Capcom had already revamped the series with the thoroughly awesome Bionic Commando Rearmed a few months prior to this game's release (which might've incidentally helped lead to the game's demise).  Unfortunately this game was full of frustrating gameplay, an awful story, and the game just didn't look good.  Sure the menu was cool and the music was pretty good, but even the game's stylish menu and acceptable tunes weren't able to save this game from getting lost in its 2D brother's shadow.

5. Daikatana

Remember that snazzy advert claiming that "John Romero's about to make you his bitch."?  Of course you do.  We all do.  But did Mr. Romero succeed in making us his bitches?  I'd say no.  Aggressive advertising aside, this rather ambitious game made some lofty promises, none of which it managed to keep.  Advertised as the brainchild of John Romero (Doom, Quake) it was going to guide the industry into a new era of creative freedom.  I loved Quake and Doom, the originals are two of my favorite games, so I thought this too had to be good.  Ahh, to be young and naive again, this game sucked, and sucked hard.  But since the gaming public is of the creed 'Forgive and Forget', this fiasco has long been forgotten.  Ha!  I can't even say that and keep a straight face (though for you it's probably difficult to see my expression as I write this).  Nah, this PR catastrophe won't be forgotten for a long time, and Daikatana will always hold a special place in the heart of this miraculous industry for tons of ridicule, and a special place in mine for being a complete letdown.

4. Doom 3

One of the grandaddies of the modern FPS, the Doom series is one of the most highly revered franchises in the history of gaming, and the games are what put id Software on the map as a respected developer.  Obviously, Doom 3 had some seriously high expectations to live up to, and while it is in now way a bad game, it definitely didn't reach it's potential.  Praised for its gorgeous visuals and atmospheric sound design, Doom 3 was a great game that was unfortunately weighed down by repetitive combat, labyrinthine environments, and an abundance of annoying monster closets.

3. Fable (series)

Ahh, I'm going to get some hate for this choice.  I say bring it on fanboys!  As a sort of disclaimer, Fable is a great series and I've had tons of fun playing both.  Now that that's said, Peter Moleneux has mastered the art of overhyping his games, or at least not necessarily delivering on all of his promises when it comes to his games.  While the ultra creepy toy for pedophiles (Milo) has some mostly unnecessary hype surrounding it, the Fable series has been surrounded in a delirium of hype and high aspirations.  I remember hearing that every decision I made would affect the world, and that I could plant a tree and come back to see it fully grown.  While the absence of the latter didn't necessarily bother me, I loved the idea of changing the world around me as I pleased so when I I learned that my affect on the world was limited to say the least, it was more than a little disappointing.  Maybe the already announced Fable III will deliver on some of the promises Fable II failed to keep, but if they don't change anything please improve the character customization.  I hated the way my character looked in Fable II, and the clothing and lack of armor was unfortunate.

2. Alone in the Dark

I like my survival horror games.  I like them a lot.  I'm also a big fan of the original Alone in the Dark because it's one of the first "horror" games I ever played.  The series' entrance into this generation of consoles promised a ton of innovation, and supposedly the fire was going to change the way fire looked and functioned in games from then on.  While the latter was only a little impressive, there's an argument to say the game might've aspired to be too much.  It had some pretty original ideas, some worked, others didn't.  The DVD style menu was a cool idea, and came in handy when I needed to skip over some of the more frustrating sections in the game, the dual joystick combat was a nice attempt at innovation but became too frustrating and was occasionally unresponsive, the inventory, while flawed, was one of the game's strongest features, and the visuals that were praised almost every time you heard about the game, failed to impress in the final product.  But by far one of the game's weakest elements was its pacing.  You start off trying to escape from the inside of a crumbling building; it's fun, intense, and serves as a good introduction to the game's world, then you get to the game's first car chase, and Oh My God this game went from a solid action game to one of the most frustrating games I've ever played.  Throw in a Good vs. Evil story written by an over caffeinated five year-old, and one of the worst final acts possible (you hunt down one hundred devil trees.  Seriously.  I wish I was kidding.) and you have yourself a flop.

1. Resident Evil 5

Let me start off by saying that in now way is RE5 a bad game, or anywhere close to being a bad game.  However, if one were to compare it to its predecessor, the masterpiece known as Resident Evil 4, RE5 isn't even in the same ballpark.  The inventory was changed to something much more frustrating, the 'horror' element was removed entirely, the story was a train wreck, they turned one of the series' beloved characters (Jill) and turned her into some Dead or Alive reject, and the partner AI is surprisingly bad for such a polished game.  Sounds harsh?  Tough love I say!  Capcom has recognized the less positive critical reception RE5 received, saying Resident Evil 6 will be yet another reboot of the premier survival horror franchise.  I'm going to desperately hope the series goes back to its roots and brings back the scares and shambling zombies.  Oh, and please Capcom, add strafing.  I know you said the inability to move while firing a weapon was done on purpose to 'make the game more suspenseful', but Dead Space had strafing and that game was scary as hell.

So those are the games that supremely pissed me off.  Just because a game made the list doesn't mean I think it's a bad game.  In no way do I consider Resident Evil 5, Fable, Doom 3, and Heavenly Sword bad games.  I just don't think they were as good as they could've been, or that they were anywhere as good as I was led to believe they would be.  If anything, this is a testament to the fact that you shouldn't believe in the hype games get, because most of the time the game won't live up to the hype.  But these are just the games that let me down, so what are some games I missed that made you want to kick a baby?  Let me know in the comments section below.

I'd have to say that Tabula Rasa is my #1 disappointment, and I'm not even talking about the game's launch but its end. They hyped the ending as humanity's last stand, but instead it was actually quite boring.

As for Fable, they're great games, but Moleneux definitely overhypes them.

Holy damn Adam I hope you're prepared for the serious backlash that putting Doom 3, Fable 2, and Resident Evil 5 on this list is going to get you!

The fanboys cometh, and they're going to be pissed.

Anyways, I love horror games almost as much as you so I am down with Alone in the Dark and Doom 3 because those games just weren't anywhere near as good as I was hoping they were going to be. As for RE5 I could write a very long article about things they need to fix in the next Resident Evil, so I won't fill this comments section with that crap.

And oh my God, don't even get me started on the crapfest that was Bionic Commando. SO disappointing.
Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5

I really didn't like Resident Evil 5, the level design was poor, i'll give you an E.G. That stair level you know the one... (lots of button pressing etc)

Why did the monster have GUNS!?!? near end of game.

Why was there always a BIG GUN near a BOSS every time? (no skill needed)

They tryed to make the game too much like Res 4. (why have crossbows?)

Someone with you all the time.

Still no zombies? smilies/sad.gif

where was the "hehe thank up" "ah i'll buy it at a high price" "what you selling?"

Very bad Resident Evil Game to date.

Im a big Resident Evil fan i've got all the Resident Evil games even got a gamecube just for the remake of Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 4 and the rest.

I really liked Resident Evil 4 very well made as are the rest.

doom 3 is a classic. couldnt agree more with HAZE tho

GTA 4 has got to be the most over-hyped game ever.

a few missed overhyped games: Halo 3, Gears, Spore, any HL2 Episode and (althought its not a game) the WII

@Maxxie: I've never played Tabular Rasa, but I heard its end was less a bang and more of a whimper.

@CuddlySandpaper: I know! I'm ready for the hate, I can take it. But I tried to make this 'Top 10 List' less of an 'All Time' Top 10 List, and more just the games that pissed me off. In my opinion, hype is the type of thing that changes with every gamer. But I'm glad you agree.

@gtamike: Like I said in the article, I don't think RE5's a bad game, but I completely agree with you that RE4 rocks and that they should've brought back the Merchant from RE4. He was totally awesome.

@Umm Da Dum: (Great name btw), GTAIV was way overhyped, but I wasn't scorned by the game because I've never been a huge fan of the series. Spore was on the list though! But I had to remove it in lieu of Alone in the Dark.
Fable Rocks!
written by ChrisE, September 12, 2009
Take Fable off that list and add Killzone 2. All the hype for the most generic FPS of this generation. It still never lived up to the original bullshots.
Hmmmm
written by Folix, September 12, 2009
I agree with you on alot of your choices. Fable II was a huge let down for me, even more then the first one. Too Human crushed my gaming soul, what a shitty game. RE 5 made me cry, its controls oh dear god why. Im going to go out on a limb here and say that I disagree about Heavenly Sword. I LOVED the game, the emotional story, the cinematic moments and the visuals. The game was short but that didnt make it bad. I would say Halo 3 if it werent for the stellar multiplayer would have been at the top of the list.

And good old Daikatana, I remember playing the demo, and going WTF is going on here.

i think that fable series should be changed to fable 2 because fable 1 lived up to expectations fable 2 did not with expansions and all it is still short as hell
sorry but i had to say this because in your reason it mostly aims at fable 2 anyway

Im glad u mentioned Resi 5, i mean this was touted as a GOTY certainty, yet its just been completely forgotten about. I also agree that they ruined Jills persona.

However, I didnt think Resi 4 was the game that everyone claimed it was. Not as good as the original trilogy anyway.
woooOOOW!! Behold the mother of all recent unexpected failures! (in 1way or another)
written by Brutikus, September 12, 2009
Socom Confrontation! recently announced to have one of the largest followings on PS3 and imo their one game that gives some of 360's live atmosphere through communication, more so, the need of it to fully enjoy. Slant 6 has been dragging the carcass of a game that was greatly anticipated to be next gen in more the just the graphics(as usually is the case). Most glaring of the failure is people still play it like mad, some old fans some new, while all now await it's 1.6 patch that should fix 1.5, that should've fixed 1.4, that should've fixed 1.3, (followed to release) -Nothing says failure like repeated chances to not do so!
RE:5 sucked.
written by SlaughterMeister, September 12, 2009
Resident Evil 5 wasn't just overhyped, it blew.

It had absolutely zero memorable moments, with the near-exception of the ending, which is more worthy of non-remembrance than even an inkling of a reminder.

The whole game sucked, and just when we all thought they were finally bringing zombies back, THEY DIDN'T! It was terrible all-around, and had absolutely nothing of the original magic the original games had. Go back and play the old ones, they are cheesy as hell and the voice acting is despicable. Nonetheless, they were FUN. RE:5 was not. At all.

no halo ? i was thinking it would be #1 on this list. but it didnt even show up in the top ten.!?!??! lol, im just messing around, but i think it was over hyped and overrated, but it doesnt belong on top ten. im actually playing heavenly sword right now, its a good game, but defeintitely was a let down cuz of all the hype. stupid hype XD. just like spider man 3 the movie, worst movie in spider man trilogy, haha

Good article
written by Jason P, September 12, 2009
I don't have any experience with the PS3 games...

I played the Bionic Commando MP demo on XBL and felt that the game had a lot of competitive potential. The game itself failed to deliver, not seeming to fix any of the problems the demo had.

I personally felt that Fable 2 was an absolute embarrassment. By itself, an acceptable game, but for all the hype around being able to control the world, you had no control what-so-ever.

Final note to the poster above me. The list isn't about how much a game sucks. Furthermore, Halo 1 delivered, and was an excellent game.

Heavenly Sword is INSANELY under-rated, and is one of the best games this generation.

It was far from a button masher and had plenty of combos to memorize, it had replay value for beating it on God mode, it had the best voice acting i think i've ever heard, and definitely had enough "awesome" moments to justify 60 bucks... I actually bought it twice since somebody stole my copy (along with CoD3. But who really cares about that? xD)

Anyway. Heavenly Sword totally doesn't belong on here.

I agree with every game on this list. I've played every game mentioned (other than Heavenly Sword), and suffice to say, each one promised spectacular things that the end result just didn't deliver on.

Too Human and RE5 are definitely the top let downs for me on the list. I would say Fable 2 as well, but after Fable 1 I learned to take everything Peter said about F2 with a grain of salt; so I wasn't really expecting much at all, thus not let down.

My own personal choice for most over-hyped game (mind you, this game was/is over-hyped after the fact)is easily Final Fantasy 7.

The game by every means was a fantastic RPG and definitely had me spending hours and hours and hours playing it. But it is in no way the best RPG ever, let alone the best Final Fantasy game ever, it's far from either.
If anything, I blame the fans for how obsessive and ignorant people are over this game. I'd also like to add that Sephiroth was one of the worst villains in the franchise.

Bring on the hate, fanboys.
Longer List
written by Asian, September 13, 2009
Gears, GTAIV, Killzone 2, Assassins Creed, Devil May Cry 4, and Ninja Gaiden 2 deserved a spot on this list. Devil May Cry 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 were both great action/adventure games no doubt. But they both failed to live up to their predecessors. Dante was nerfed to hell and back (Kobayoshi promised more weapons than all three DMCs combined), and Ninja Gaiden 2 was unfairly cheap unlike Ninja Gaiden: Black which was the perfect in terms of difficulty because it rewarded skill no luck.

It's older but I'm gonna suggest Shenmu.

This game was so hyped up as some free form immersive experience.

Then it ended up being a series of "walk slowly everywhere fetch quests" where I have to go talk to a bunch of random people whoes names I can't remember because they are are all in Japanese.
Bang on about Resi 5
written by Shine, September 13, 2009
Resi 5 was an utter sham compared to the sublime Resi 4. Sigh, such a waste. Not really feeling you on Fable - sure PM hyped it but the games are solid.

You missed out Perfect Dark Zero - possibly the biggest disappointment in gaming in the last 5 years.

Someone put forward Assasins Creed - you miss the point of the article - they didn't hype the game that much.

Hint: I don't go to 4chan either.
Good Attempt
written by CloseButFar, September 13, 2009
Good list, but replace Heavenly Sword with Kane & Lynch, also put Too Human a little higher up.

Heavenly Sword might have been lacking a bit in combat in comparison to the greatest game in the genre (GOW), it did deliver in many other categories.

I really liked Haze. I had no problems with it whatsoever. It did get a LOT of hype but it was still a nice smooth experience, not a short but unfinished bug-fest. I think almost every sport game ever made needs to go on this list, as does the need for speed underground series. Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 also belong here.
RE5 no.1?
written by Acidzburns, September 14, 2009
The only games i ever played that made the list was RE5. It was in no way dissapointing. The gameplay was hectic, it was relatively bug-free, has a lot of action sequence in it n classic item menus.

If anything, either prototype should be up there, along with the epic failure that was far cry 2. Such a big stupid map without a proper vehicles to cover vast distances in short time. It made the game stupid. Covering distances for no reason. Also, man grow on trees in far cry 2.
you missed my #1

Final Fanatasy X-2, the first true sequal to a final fantasy game (Final Fantasy X personally was one of my favorites in the FF franchise), the game was terrible and didn't appeal to me at all the summons were gone( although I know that ties in to the first game), it had dress spheres which removed the fun part of getting badass armor and customizing your character, a terrible storyline, and even removed the badass overdrives. The characters personas seemed 2-D and annoying and the main enemy of the game was merely a nuesance and was just as stupid in premise. The quests were repetive and boring and the entire game just ticked me off, and the highlight of the game was just seeing cameos of the characters that I never played as from FFX (Wakka, Lulu, & Kimarhi). I felt like square enix really let me down and it seemed like the game was only made to play off the popularity of the original mega hit. My apologies if this comes out a bit confusing I didn't have time to proof read.

Over-Hyped games
written by Calmiche, November 16, 2009
I'm reminded that "Arguing on the internet means you've already lost"

Having said that, this isn't a list of good games and bad games. It's a list of games that were MASSIVELY over-hyped before release and didn't live up to the hype.

Halo 1 should be on here. I remember reading articles when it wasn't a xbox exclusive and seeing the original trailer's on a PC gamer CD. No master chief, much better graphics and destined for PC gaming.

Black and White should be here too. Not a bad game but Moleneux promised a creature that learned with a hugely advanced AI. The game didn't come close. Not to mention that a common bug deleted your creature's brain at regular intervals, leaving it a drooling idiot.

Lair had a huge marketing blitz but suffered from bad cameras and TERRIBLE controls.

Killzone 1 was marketed as the game to take the best FPS title away from HALO. Not even close.

Anyone remember Advent Rising? This one is more of a personal angry one. Very promising game with a plot written by a real Sci-Fi writer. (Orson Scott Card, author of Ender's Game.) Music by Tommy Tallarico, a legend in game music. It was supposed to be a three part series. (Heck, the webpage is still adventtrilogy.com) I enjoyed it but the series died almost instantly.
